Prof Mererid Evans
Professor Mererid Evans (PhD) is a Clinical Professor at Cardiff University and Honorary Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Velindre Cancer Centre, Cardiff. She is Director of the Wales Cancer Research Centre (WCRC), a Health and Care Research Wales/Welsh Government funded research infrastructure that enables cancer research across Wales and is coordinating the implementation of Wales’ Cancer Research Strategy (CReSt).
Her own research focusses on Human Papillomavirus (HPV)-associated Head and Neck cancers. She has studied the prevalence of HPV in Head and Neck cancer across the UK, and is currently Chief Investigator of two Clinical Trials that are aiming to develop kinder treatments for patients with HPV-positive Head & Neck cancer: 1) PATHOS, a Cancer Research UK (CRUK) funded international phase III multi-centre clinical trial looking at de-intensification of adjuvant radiotherapy after transoral surgery (co-led by Professor Terry Jones, Liverpool University) and 2) PEARL, a Cancer Research Wales (CRW) funded UK phase II multi-centre clinical trial looking at the benefit of Adaptive Radiotherapy (ART) based on biological tumour response, detected on Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography (FDG-PET) scanning, during radiotherapy (co-led by Dr Tom Rackley, Velindre).
She is also a co-investigator on PROTIS, a UK randomised trial comparing proton beam and photon radiotherapy for sinonasal cancers (CI: Dr David Thompson, Manchester University) and RAPTOR, a UK randomised trial of PENTOCLO in mandibular osteoradionecrosis (CI: Professor Richard Shaw, Liverpool University).
